The truth is we are all doing things in our lives that we need to let go of if we truly want to be happy and progress in life. It is always important to focus on the person you truly want to be.
Sammie U. Aysan, Executive Assistant, Duke Energy Corporation and a LinkedIn Influencer, believes that dropping these 10 things will help you live a much happier, and more enjoyable life.
Drop the negative people around you
Who are these negative people? Also known as the ‘Energy Suckers’, they have a way of pushing you to breaking point. We all have people who expect us to switch to their mannerism or way of thinking. This is easier said than done to avoid their influence, but you have to work on it.
It is even harder when that person is a family member or a very close friend. A way out of this could be to drop them gradually while staying out of their way as much as you can. “Another thing you can do is counteract all their negatives with positives, oh! They don’t like that, and the more you do it the more they will avoid you”.
Drop caring about the mistakes you have made
Making mistakes in life is inevitable, there is no one who has succeeded in life without making one or two bad decisions. Remember you learn a lesson from mistakes and move on. Below are the two mistake camps you can fall under.
“Camp one: woe is me, I made a mistake I am such a loser, I totally embarrassed myself, I’ll never be able to show my face in public again,” she explained. “Camp two: I made a mistake, sure as hell won’t be doing that again, but at least I learned what not to do.”
Forget the past
The truth is that you cannot change what has already happened. It is very possible to make amends but that will not alter the occurrence. “[…] you can say you’re sorry about something you’ve done in the past but the fact remains the past has happened and it can’t be changed.”
Dwelling on the past hinders you from focusing on the future and whatever opportunities it may hold. Don’t let it hold you back!
Drop your self portrait
Are you really going to put on a different act depending on the company you have? “You act differently depending on the people you are with at the time, you don’t speak or act the same way with your mates as you do with your parents, but really you should.” Confidence is paramount to your decisions and path in life, without this, you will never feel good enough.
The right people will accept you for exactly who you are, without any reservations. “When you meet someone who is truly authentic they totally shine above everyone else, there’s no airs and graces, you either take them the way they are or you don’t, simple as that.”
Stop feeling bad for yourself
Everyone needs a wakeup call every once in a while. Do not wallow in self-pity, when all you may need is a little bravery to overcome the challenges. “Sometimes it’s great just to sit on the ‘poor me’ train and just let it roll into ‘Woe is me’ station, but the longer you are on that train the more difficult it is to get off it.”
It is really easy, just focus on getting out of it because it doesn’t allow you to advance or remain happy in life. This is a matter of choice, it would be wise to make the best one.
Drop saying yes all the time
There are times to say yes, just as there are times to say no. You should be able to object especially when it addresses something that makes you uncomfortable. In this situation however hard it may be, you need to find a way of saying no.
“The first time you say no to someone, when you usually say yes, will empower you so much that it can turn your life around.”
Drop trying to please everyone
No matter how nice you are, it is impossible to please everyone. “[…] even if you’re the nicest, most splendid, most loveliest, most loving person in the world there’s always someone who will not like you for some reason.”
It is perfectly okay for some people not to like you, it doesn’t make you any less of a human being. It is also acceptable for you to stop going the extra, extra mile in a bid to please them.
Drop saying the right thing
You will definitely want to be cautious when talking to your parents, the media, school, co-workers and friends. But most people take this too far because of the fear of what people will say. We should be able to air opinions about anything we are entitled to.
“I’m not saying you should try and offend everyone who gets in your way, but if you have a strong opinion about something, speak up and let your voice be heard.”
Stop limiting beliefs
If there is anything that has evolved over the years, it is the ability of human beings to change their beliefs, particularly our limiting beliefs. When you think about what you truly want to do with your life, what do you come up with? The answers are usually what reveal your limiting beliefs.
“When you know your limiting beliefs you can then work on dropping them or replacing them with alternative more positive focused beliefs that will drive you forward in life.”
Drop worrying about the future
“If you do your best today, your future has already been taken care of.”
